Air Conditioner Won't Turn On? Here's What to Check

AC Tune Up

There's nothing worse than a hot day and an air conditioner that refuses to turn on. Waiting until the heat becomes unbearable to call for emergency AC repairs can frustrate you. There are a few simple checks you can do to troubleshoot the issue and potentially get your AC running again

1. Circuit Breaker Tripped

A tripped circuit breaker is one of the most common reasons an AC won’t turn on. Check your electrical panel and see if the breaker connected to your AC unit has flipped. If so, reset it and try turning your AC back on. If it trips again, an underlying electrical issue may require professional attention.

2. AC Disconnect Shut Off Switch

Your air conditioning system has a shut-off switch near the outdoor unit. Sometimes, it may have been accidentally turned off or triggered for safety reasons. Check to ensure it is in the “on” position.

3. Thermostat Issue

Your thermostat controls when your AC turns on, so make sure it is set correctly. Verify that it’s on “cool” mode and that the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature. If your thermostat runs on batteries, replace them to see if that resolves the issue.

4. Look at the Outdoor Unit

Your AC’s outdoor unit needs proper airflow to function. Check if debris, leaves, or dirt are blocking the unit and remove any obstructions. If the coils are dirty, clean them gently with a hose to improve efficiency.

5. Check the Drain Pan and Condensate Line

A clogged condensate drain line can trigger a safety switch that shuts off your AC. Look for water buildup in the drain pan and clear any blockages in the line using a wet/dry vacuum or a thin brush.

6. Ensure the AC Unit’s Power Switch is On

Some AC units have an additional power switch near the indoor unit or on the furnace. If this switch was accidentally turned off, your AC won’t start. Make sure it’s in the “on” position.

When to Call a Professional

If you’ve checked everything and your AC still won’t turn on, it could be due to a faulty capacitor, compressor issues, or low refrigerant levels. These require professional diagnosis and repair.
